One of the merits of Socialism was that it creates equality among the citizens, and children of poor and rich parents have more similar opportunities in life than in Capitalism.
A demerit of socialism is that is slows down production and progress, as people have less incentive to work hard, as the benefits are more spread throughout the population and benefit the people themselves less than in capitalism.
