During the Great Leap Forward, Chinese peasants were forced to leave their agriculture behind and work in factories to industrialize China. This was actually extremely unsuccessful and caused millions of deaths across the country, now categorized as a genocide. The reason for the Great Leap Forward was because Mao Zedong (the leader at the time) made an economic and social campaign to rapidly transform China from an agrarian economy into a socialist society through rapid industrialization and collectivization.
