The Case of the Lost Watch
I walked quickly along the crowded sidewalk. I was late for school, but if I tried to run too fast I would run into someone and drop my bag, and
that would only make me later.
Just as I thought this, a man running in the other direction collided with me, sending me reeling back. He was wearing a fancy dark blue suit and
shiny shoes, but his hair was untidy and his face was red and sweaty from running. "
Excuse me!" he yelled as he dashed around me and kept
running the other way.
I blinked, looking down at my feet to make sure I hadn't dropped anything. There on the ground in front of me was a sparkling silver watch,
smooth and polished on every side. Thinking it must belong to the man in the suit, I snatched it up
and turned to yell after him, "Hey! You
forgot
this, Mister!" It was too late. The man had disappeared into the crowd.
Revise the underlined sentence by choosing the sentence that would best introduce the narrative by providing a clear description of the setting.
I looked frantically around the street, trying to find the fastest path through the crowd of people on my way to school.
I tried to walk as fast as I could on the crowded sidewalk, worried that if I was too slow I would earn another tardy on my attendance.
I walked as quickly as I could, dodging swinging briefcases and weaving among people young and old as cars roared by on the street
alongside me.
I dashed swiftly down the street as the hood of my sweatshirt flapped behind me.
