The foundation of every good essay is a strong thesis statement. A thesis is a statement made up of claims that you will try to prove in an essay. The claims in the thesis should answer the prompt, and they must be statements that can be supported by evidence. A thesis statement is usually two or three sentences long because it must make multiple claims. The thesis will appear in the first paragraph along with your introduction. (The introductory sentences should come first.) Here is the prompt for this essay project: Prompt: Analyze the changes and continuities in the lives of African Americans during the 19th century. You should continue taking notes to include information that you learned in this lesson. Then write a rough draft of your introduction paragraph, which should include your thesis. Your thesis should contain claims about two changes and one continuity in the lives of African Americans during the 19th century. You will most likely make changes to this paragraph as you continue writing your essay, but it will help you to have a foundation moving forward.
