Originally, there were 13 US District Courts, established by the Judiciary Act of 1789. Each of the original 13 states had its own district court. These courts were created to serve as the trial courts of the federal judiciary, handling cases within their respective geographic areas. Over time, as the country expanded and population grew, new district courts were created, leading to the current system of 94 district courts across the United States and its territories.
