Despite the demise of the urban "party machines" of the late 19th and early
20th centuries, state and local party organizations still play an important role
in national elections because:
OA. they rely upon corruption and fraud to influence electoral
outcomes.
OB. they provide social services for party supporters.
OC. they distribute large numbers of local government jobs to party
supporters through the patronage system.
OD. they often receive large amounts of "soft money" from the national
party organization to promote national candidates in addition to
their own state and local candidates.
E. they recruit candidates for presidential contests.
