The type of conditioning that involves the addition of an unpleasant stimulus to decrease an undesired behavior is called "positive punishment." In positive punishment, an aversive stimulus is added after the behavior to decrease the likelihood of that behavior occurring again in the future. For example, if a child talks back to their parent and the parent scolds them, the scolding is the aversive stimulus added to decrease the behavior of talking back. Over time, the child learns that talking back leads to being scolded, so they are less likely to talk back in the future.
