Material to be used in the construction of a road is to be obtained from a borrow pit. At one of the
stretches, the soil was used as a rolled fill having a total mass of solid particles equal to 1.11x108kg. In its
natural condition, the soil had the following properties w = 18%, e = 0.55, Gs = 2.75 and was excavated
and damped onto trucks having a capacity of 4.5m3
(5 tons) each when loaded to capacity. During
construction, the trucks dumped their load on the fill, the material was broken up and spread after
which a sprinkler added water until the soils moisture content was 20%. The soil and water were then
thoroughly mixed and compacted until the bulk density was 2.22 Mg/m3
. Assuming all truck loads had
to be loaded to capacity, determine:
i.
The number of truck loads used to construct the fill at the said stretch
ii.
The number of litres of water that had to be added for the construction of the entire stretch
assuming that the moisture content lost by evaporation by during excavation, hauling and
handling was negligible
