What Happened During Kristallnacht? As you advance through this course, there will be several assignments where you will need to report on events that took place during the Holocaust. Something important to keep in mind when writing research materials is to use proper writing style. There are several styles of writing, such as APA or MLA. Consult your instructor to find out which they prefer you use.
Once you know which style to work on, make sure you cite your sources correctly in every paper
Here is an example of a source cited in APA style
Author's Last Name, First Initial. (Year, Month, Day). Title of Article.
Website Name. URL Step 1: Conduct Research
Find three articles about Kristallnacht from reputable sources such as news outlets, encyclopedias, non-profit organizations, public media, or educational institutions. Make sure one of them includes information about commemorations of Kristallnacht, which had its 80th anniversary in 2018. Examine some sources from the international community to see how the event was reported around the globe. Read them carefully and then complete both parts of the Activity. Cite your sources using the correct style.
Step 2: Travel Back in Time
Imagine you were a reporter in 1938 who had been asked to write a news artidle on Kristallnacht. Write a two paragraph summary of the events. Make sure to include information on what is happening, who it is happening to, and why it is happening.
Step 3: Reflecting on Kristallnacht
Write an essay, record a podcast, or make a video presentation that clearly answers the following questions: 1. What were the effects of Kristallnacht? Why is it an important event in history?
2 While there were some people who did intervene during Kristallnacht, many people did not. Why do you think so many people remained as bystanders? What responsibility do you think bystanders hold for allowing Kristallnacht to happen?
3. According to your research, what were the effects of Kristallnacht on the international community? How did this change the awareness level of those outside Germany?
4. On the anniversary of Kristallnacht, people remember the event but also look for ways that this act is relevant to current events. What current event do you think has some echoes of Kristallnacht and how would you compare the two events?
