Romeo & Juliet
Have you ever witnessed mutual love at first sight? Romeo and Juliet is a play by William Shakespeare. It is about the forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet both from a feud against the other, Romeo and Juliet must find a way to stay with each other even if it brings them to death. Baz Luhrmann turned Shakespeare’s play into a movie in 1996. There are many similarities and differences between the play and the movie. One similarity is Romeo doesn't know that plan when it comes to Juliet faking her death because of poor planning from Friar Lawrence, and one difference is when Romeo goes to see Juliet’s grave in the Capulet Monastery where he plans to take his life next to Juliet.
The play and the movie Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare are similar in many ways the best example of the most important similarities is when we find that Frair John was unable to give the letter to Romeo. This part of the book and movie is super important because Romeo and Juliet's deaths will follow it up. Besides that fact, if the letter was delivered on time and seen in time, Romeo and Juliet would be alive. “Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, The letter was not nice but full of charge, Of dear import, and the neglecting it may do much danger. Friar John, go hence. Get me an iron crow and bring it straight to my cell.” (V. II.17-22). Friar Lawrence is talking to Friar John about how John could’nt deliver the letter and Friar Lawrence is expressing how dangerous it is now that Romeo doesn't know about the plan. This part of the play Romeo and Juliet is very similar to the movie because in the movie Friar John is unable to find Romeo so he leaves the letter for him on the door of his house which is getting blown away by the wind. The two similarities are both equally important because will lead up to the climax of the story where Romeo and Juliet will both take their own life to be with each other. The two similarities also share that the letter never ends up in Romeo's hands during the play and film.
By far the biggest difference between the play and the movie Romeo and Juliet is when Romeo is on his way to visit Juliet at the Capulet monastery to kill himself by his wife's body. Once upon entering the city of Verona in the play Romeo sneaks around to get to the monastery where he encounters and slays Paris who is visiting Juliet's grave. After Paris is dead Romeo makes his way to Juliet's graveside where he takes poison and dies, Juliet wakes up and kills herself with Romeo's blade. “Here’s to my love [Drinking] O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” (V.III.119-120). In this scene, Romeo takes the poison and dies at Juliet's side after Romeo dies, Juliet grabs Romeo's blade and kills herself. During this same scene but in the movie, we see pronounced differences like the way Juliet dies, the way Romeo enters Verona, and the fate of Paris. Unlike the play, Romeo in the movie enters the city being chased by the police while he is trying to get to the Capulet monastery. Once he makes it to the monastery he goes inside as the police wait outside for him, Paris doesn't end up fighting Romeo and Romeo goes next to Juliet's body where he takes his poison right as Juliet wakes up, Juliet and Romeo have a short conversation about their love before Romeo ends up dying, Juliet is overtaken by grief and takes Romeo's handgun and kills herself.
