One clear of the district, he broke into a trot. He did not slacken his pace as he passed
through the downtown area with its wonderland shop windows. His elation seeped out as he
neared the park and his footsteps dragged.
in front of him was the park with its gate and iron railings. Behind the railings, impaled, the
notice board. He could see the swings beyond. The sight strengthened him.
He walked over, his breath coming faster. There was no one in sight. A car turned a comer
and came towards him and he started at the sound of its engine. The car swept past,
the
tyres softly licking the asphalt.
The railings were ice-cold to his touch and the shock sent him into action. He extends his
arms and with monkey-like movements pulled himself up to perch on top of the railings then
dropped onto the newly turned earth.
