In the narratives we study this week (Eat, Drink, Man, Woman and Soul Food), the preparation and serving of meals are important signifiers of a family’s identity and cultural background – we are very aware that family members are often conflicted between their role in the family and their personal identity. The meal scenes are often the place where this conflict is most evident. Why do you think this is?
Describe one of the scenes and your reaction to it. Feel free to compare and contrast it to the importance of meal rituals in your own life.
