In the 1660s, Sir Isaac Newton developed a theory about the force of gravity. A friend of Newton's wrote about the discovery. According to
this account, Newton said he was sitting in an apple orchard. He watched an apple fall to the ground. He wondered why the apple fell straight
down, instead of up or to the side. He decided there must be a force that draws all objects towards the Earth's center. Newton created a math
problem about gravity. He solved the problem to show that the force of gravity was weak far away from Earth, and strong close to Earth. Through
this math, he also showed that gravity kept the Moon and the other planets in their orbits.
