The American Revolution worked its greatest changes in the constitutional framework of state
government. Republics
had replaced royal colonies. Checks and balances ensured that the
power of any one political
official could be curbed by other officials. Regular elections upon a
very broad franchise(for that
day and age) guaranteed that the people retained their
sovereignty. It only
remained to be seen whether thirteen small republics could find a way to
become one great nation.
