This Unit has focused on career preparation and what you can do to better prepare to make career choices and succeed in your chosen profession. In this chapter, the idea of building basic skills that can be used in any workplace, also known as transferable skills, was introduced. These skills include, but are not limited to: active listening, computer literacy, effective time management, problem solving, and writing skills. Following the five steps of the Writing Process as explained earlier in this Chapter, use the Text Editor to create an essay with five paragraphs: an introduction with a thesis statement, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Think about the transferable skills explained in this Unit and how they might relate to you and your chosen career path. Use the following questions as guidelines: How can the skills introduced in this chapter help you in your future career? Which skills do you feel are most important to you now? Which skills do you think will be most important in your future? How can the skills you are learning now—in this course, your life, a current job—help you reach future goals? How can you incorporate these transferable skills into your career action plan? Which of these skills do you do well at and which do you need to work on? How might your current skill levels be obstacles to meeting your career goals and how might these obstacles be overcome? Your first step in writing your essay will be to do some pre-writing—come up with ideas, choose a topic about which to write, and form a purpose and thesis statement for your essay. This involves writing down multiple ideas (you can choose from the examples above or create your own), then deciding which one interests you and can be supported by a valid thesis statement and supporting evidence. Your third step will be revising, where youwill go back over the essay to make corrections and improve upon what you have written.
