During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln suspended habeas corpus across the entire country. Habeas corpus is the constitutional right of an arrested person to appear in court charged with a crime. He justified his action by saying that he was willing to violate the Constitution in order to save the Union. As a result, tens of thousands of people, including private citizens and newspaper editors and reporters, were arrested for opposing the war, or for criticizing government policies such as the draft or emancipation.
