When stripping wire insulation:

a. Use a knife or razor blade.
b. Strip at least 0.5" (12.7 mm) beyond the joint or terminal.
c. Strip no more than 0.5" (12.7 mm) at a time.
d. Use a propane torch to soften the insulation first.
