P1.45
A boy of mass 60 kg, and his sister of mass 49kg.
play on a see-saw pivoted at its centre. If the boy
sits 2.7 metres from the pivot of the see-saw,
how far from the other side of the pivot must
the girl sit to make the see-saw balance?

Answer :

Explanation:

force 1 x distance 1 from pivot = force 2 x distance 2 from pivot

the weight is a force (1:1).

so,

60×2.7 = 49×distance 2

162 = 49 × distance 2

distance 2 = 162/49 = 3.306122449... m

she must sit 3.306122449... ≈ 3.3 m from the pivot on her side.
