Is it Alive?
What's the difference between an object and an organism? An object is inanimate, or not alive, whereas an organism is living. But what determines life? There are five basic characteristics of life. In order for something to be living, it must satisfy all five characteristics. If it's living, it's an organism!
The Five Characteristics of Life:

2. Responds to Environment
3. Grows (at least once)
4. Reproduces
5. Adapts to Environment
