### DLE 532: Biliteracy Autobiography Reflective Notes

Building on their linguistic autobiography essays written in DLE 515, students will trace their experiences with literacy development in two or more languages by tracing early to current day literacy events and literacy practices (Heath, 1983) in the home, at school, in the larger community, and any other domains. These will include traditional literacy events and practices that involve reading and writing, and examples of multiliteracies (e.g., visual, textual, digital, technological) and experiences with multimodal texts. Students can describe their feelings and attitudes towards literacy and biliteracy that have developed as a result of these experiences. Students can also make connections between these literacy experiences and the impact they have on their current attitudes and beliefs about literacy.

#### Part 1: Write the Reflective Notes (1-2 pages)

Consider the following questions/prompts to guide the writing of your biliteracy reflection. These are just guide questions and they do not all need to be answered.

- What do you recall as your first literacy event(s)? With whom did these take place? Where did these take place? In what language(s) did they occur?
- How did you learn to speak/read/write in your first language?
- If applicable, how did you learn to speak/read/write in your second/third language? How were these experiences similar or different?
- Do you enjoy reading now? In what language do you prefer to read?
- Do you enjoy writing now? In what language do you prefer to write?
- What are your experiences with multimodal texts?
- What experiences do you have with multiliteracies?
- Take what you know about reading and writing and apply that knowledge to yourself. How were you taught to read? How were you taught to write?
- What support did you need? What support could you have used?
- If applicable, how are your literacy skills stronger in one language over the other?
