The area of the United States that showed the strongest support for ratification of the Constitution was coastal areas near the Atlantic Ocean. In contrast, frontier areas west of the Appalachian Mountains, such as Kentucky and Tennessee, showed more resistance to ratification due to concerns about potential loss of individual freedoms and the influence of a distant central government.
